Be at one with the sword at the Traditional Korean Karate Academy at north lakes.
The Flinders Pde martial arts school has just launched a Korean sword (kumdo) class
on Thursdays at 7.30pm for those looking to appreciate the history of art.
Chief instructor Sean Buchanan said during the class participants learnt the basics
of sword-cutting in the korean way and practiced combat techniques with partners.
"Those that are inexperienced practice with bamboo and wooden swords," he said. "Its
hard, physical workout... it increases fitness, upper-body strength and there is a
lot of speed involved.
Mr Buchanan said the class was suitable for anyone aged 11 and over and mature enough
to understand the responsibility of weapons training.
Mr Buchanan's wife Daphne is also running five karate fitness classes a week for
those less serious about martial arts.
"The classes are less formal, a fun, sweaty workout," Mr Buchanan said. "The classes
increase cadio capacity, weight loss, muscle tone, speed, agility and flexibility."
Mr Buchanan said a martial arts background was not necessary for either class.
